Places to Stay – Jersey –  La Ferme du Vau Tocque

by Mags Nixon
Location, location, location! If its tranquil beach side living you’re after then La Ferme du Vau Tocque on the South West coast of Jersey is the perfect family getaway.  A stone’s throw from the beach, this restored farm cottage in over an acre of grounds, nestles in an idyllic position on Ouaisne Common far from the hustle and bustle of life.

Lovingly restored, this 2 bedroom cottage is perfect for a family of four with it’s cosy rooftop bedrooms oozing character with original beams and features. Throw the window open wide at night and snuggle down to the cacophony of cicadas and waves pounding the shore.

The kitchen is kitted out with a dishwasher, large fridge/freezer, microwave and more importantly a washing machine outside in the utilities converted barn – a must for holidaying with young kids!

Original stone fireplaces now house log burners for chilly nights, not that you’ll need it – Jersey boasts the most sunny days in the whole UK and has it’s own micro-climate.

We love the sun filled courtyard outside where you can eat al-fresco, enjoy the peace and quiet and soak up the sun.

The kids can run wild through the adjoining meadow or play to their hearts content in the large lawn play area.

As well as being a wonderful home from home, the La Ferme du Vau Toque is quite simply a rare gem, in that it’s location is priceless. A meandering track winds from Ouaisne beach through the bunny filled Common to this picture perfect ancient granite farm cottage.

Take a 3-minute potter back down the track to access the beach or our favourite – criss cross through the Common in the warren of sandy tracks bordered by dense spiky gorse. My girls loved the Common so much with its inter-tangled routes they made a charming map with way points such as the Reaching Roots, Gorse Alley and other such endearing namesakes. An early morning or evening stroll down to the beach when the light is of a magical luminance.

It’s refreshing to abandon the car to the driveway –  apart from occasional food stock ups (local shop 3 min drive or Co-Op/Waitrose 7 min drive) you could ditch your car keys and stay local.

Ouaisne beach is the quieter sibling of it’s lively neighbour St Brelade’s beach. A safe, sandy beach, Ouaisne is ideal for families, perfect for swimming, kite flying, rock pooling and beach BBQs.

The local pub, The Smugglers Inn, serves traditional food or car park Kismet kiosk serves surprisingly tasty bites and ridiculously delicious ice-cream.

If it’s waterside dining or the thrill of banana boats then St Brelades is easily accessed by a 10-minute walk. Joined at low tide, the two beaches become one so a quick saunter over the sand and you’re there. At high tide take the 15-minute coast path over the Penninsular via the German bunker at the far end of the beach wall. Tip: walk the extra 50m to the penninsular point for a stunning viewpoint.

The cottage is a mere 10 minutes from charming port village St Aubins and 15-20 minutes from the capital St Helier. Driving the other direction it’s only 10 minutes to famous surf beach St Ouens (pronounced St Wands).

We absolutely loved Ouaisne and staying in this beautiful cottage in a such a fabulous location was unforgettable. Highly recommended, but book early – this place books out fast!
